Interview by IAMAG

I'm Excited to share an interview I gave for iamag.co where I talk about art in VR. Check it out here!

Dog Running - VR animation using Quill

This is painted and animated in VR using Quill.
I'm currently testing an animation feature that hasn't been released yet.

The motion blur is painted. I was surprised to see how well the illusion works.

Left Brain - Right Brain

I'm super excited to bring you the news that we just released a brand new Quill update in the Oculus Store, and we’re continuing to develop and improve Quill with more updates to come.
To celebrate the update here is a new piece I call “Left Brain - Right Brain”
Inigo (the creator of Quill) recently told me that in theory you could paint a whole solar system in Quill......so I did...

A Moment in Time

Before I talk about this piece I wanted to first borrow a phrase from Steve Jobs.
"Every once in a while, a revolutionary product comes along that changes everything."
To me this applies to the Oculus Rift & Touch in combination with "Quill": A VR painting tool developed by oculus story studio. After doing several paintings in VR, one of them being "Worlds in Worlds", Quill already changed the way I look at art forever. And just as I thought it can't get more exciting the Quill team let me test a version of Quill with animation capabilities.
Immediately I started thinking about how I could use it in my work. Several years ago I used to create animated gifs in form of endless loops. I always liked how these gifs could capture moments far better than a single painting. That made me think:
"What if I painted and animated a moment in time that people could explore and experience from multiple angles at their own pace?"
This is when I started working on my first animated Quillustration. I started with a street and animated a guy walking down this street frame by frame. Then I added a guy smoking a cigarette on the other side of the street all as looping animations. The more I added to the scene the more magical it became. Seeing my painted characters come alive and being inside my painting with them was incredible. The scene kept growing and as I added positional audio to the mix it became complete. This piece took me about 80 hours to finish and the fact that Quill allows a single person to create something like this is still mind boggling to me. Important to note, what you are about to see is a real time capture of the animated Quillustration meaning it’s all running in real time inside Quill. This new medium is truly something extraordinary, it's more than I could have ever dreamed of! So thank you Inigo Quilez and the Quill team to make this possible!

Worlds in Worlds

Here is another Quill piece I created over the course of 4 days. I call it "Worlds in Worlds". When Inigo Quilez created Quill, he claimed that it would have an infinite canvas....
Now what happens if you give an artist an infinite canvas? Of course he is going to use it right? I had to put it to the test. What if there was a world within a world within a world within a world....
By zooming in and out of the worlds I created, I blew my own mind. I could not comprehend how this was possible. This tool is just limitless! Again you have to experience this in VR to be able to fully appreciate it. But here is a little demo video of "Worlds in Worlds"! Enjoy!

Quill

We are launching the Oculus Touch controllers today! And together with the hardware launch we are also launching a lot of exciting software.

I've been with Oculus Story Studio for almost two years now. We did a lot of discoveries during this time and every project we tackle is extremely exciting as we always step into the unknown trying to find new ways to tell stories in VR. During these two years I got my mind blown multiple times. Moments like when I first held the gameboy in my hands where my mind could not process the awesomeness I was experiencing. And "Quill" was one of those moments. During our annual 2day hackathon my friend and coworker Inigo Quilez came up with a prototype for a VR painting tool that later on became Quill, the key software that was used for our upcoming project "Dear Angelica" directed by Saschka Unseld. Inigo let me try it and my jaw dropped to the floor. This was the first time I was able to paint strokes in 3D space. Being able to paint freely in 3D and walk around my painting was a magical moment for me. I knew that Inigo was on to something big here. Immediately we started exchanging thoughts and features that could be added. And soon using Quill, I brought my fellow robot CU-02 to life.

I created CU-02 in 2004 CU stands for cooking unit. He is a cooking robot and works at a restaurant. But since he is one of the first models on the market he has a malfunction and falls in love with a stray cat and leaves the kitchen. (You can read more about him here) Since then I have been sending him to numerous places in the world. He has been co-existing with me in a parallel universe but it never crossed my mind that I could ever meet him in person. Until Inigo wrote "Quill" and suddenly our worlds meet. This is the piece where we first ran into each other. I painted myself an umbrella and was standing next to him just enjoying his presence....one of those moments I will remember forever.
Thank you Inigo Quilez for making this possible!

A year has past and here we are releasing Quill to the public. Quill opens a door to a new art form that never existed before. I cannot wait to see what the world will create using Quill. Yes I'm looking at you Pascal Campion!
I have a lot of Quill art that I will share with you guys in the upcoming weeks so stay tuned!

Art VR - introducing Quill & Medium

At Ocuulus Connect 3 I did a presentation about two exiting creation tools called Quill and Medium made by Oculus.
Quill is a VR Sketching/Painting Tool and Medium is a VR sculpting tool both using the oculus touch controllers that will be released December 6th this year.
This is seriously awesome stuff. I've never been so excited about technology. It's worth getting the Rift with touch just for these tools. Check it out!

Oculus Rift is shipping!

Today we started shipping the Oculus Rift. It's a huge milestone for the future of entertainment. When I first saw Oculus Story Studio's "Lost" I was convinced that VR (virtual reality) is going to be the new form of entertainment that everyone will be enjoying at home or in arcades in the near future. I'm so grateful to be part of Story Studio and this exciting time. There is so much to explore about this new medium and it will open countless new doors not only for gaming but for all sorts of entertainment and social media. It will change the way we interact with each other.
I haven't been this excited about technology since I first held the GameBoy in my hands. There is so much more we are cooking at the studio that I can not wait to share with the world soon!

I'm telling my future self, "You are living in the "good old days". Appreciate it and enjoy!"

Meet BB-8

Watched Star Wars the Force Awakens yesterday.
What a ride. I already had the RC Sphero toy of BB-8 but after watching the movie I felt the need to do some fan art. Love this new droid and the movie.
