Here are a few color keys from the sequence where the North Wind and the Penguins are spying on the bad guy. I created these pieces using screen grabs of David Huang's 3D set and his binocular head up display design. I also created an animated version of the binocular HUD based of David's design to show what the final shot should look like. I'm happy that the final version you see in the movie came really close to what you see here.
I did quite a bit of 3D modeling for the Shanghai sequence. I collaborated with Nic Henderson on this set. The first image is the aquarium interior establishing shot which is based on Nic's 3D set that he designed. Below is the version of the Shanghai dock I designed before Nic took over to add his aquarium set.
I also did various props for this sequence. In an earlier version of the story the penguins went to Hong Kong instead which is why there are designs for the hong kong sampan boats and store fronts. Unfortunately those pieces never made it into the film. If you watched the movie you might recognize the turquoise colored boat that was used in the sequence where the penguins hijack the vtol of the North Wind chasing after the bad guy.
This was one of the first sequences going into production. Below are color thumbnails for each shot accompanied by a couple of color keys a matte painting and private's glowing effect design I did for that sequence. Next stop: Shanghai!
This is the sequence where the Penguins hijack the North Wind's Vtol. The images below are early color thumbnails and designs for the sea stacks.
The North wind have a Vtol with lot's of displays in the cockpit. Below the images are the the motion graphics I designed and animated for the Vtol consoles. They got quite a bit of screen time in the Movie. You can see them in the trailer too.
